ROMEOS at the berlinale |
The coming-of-age-movie ROMEOS deals with the everyday problems and the first love of a trans-person, who was aasigned a girl, but feels as a boy. Support gets Lukas from his best friend, who’s a lesbian, but soon reaches her limit of understanding – for example why he wants to have the operation done even though he likes men. For Fabio, whom Lukas falls in love with, on the other masculinity is over-important – and his Italian must not find out about his homosexuality. Despite the difficulties the movie is showing it remains humorous and sensitive at the same time. It is a movie about growing up, finding yourself, finding friendship and loosing it – and maybe also about love.
The director Sabine Bernardi: “Transgender has really changed my view of identity and so in ROMEOS I wanted to tell a story about a young person’s courage to live the way they feel is right for them. On an emotional level, I was less interested in their inner turmoil than I was in finding out what they need in order to live happily. In this way, ROMEOS is a love story, at times funny and a bit cheeky, but the attitude was always that your gender identity is your own business.” ROMEOS, Cubix 7&8 Interlock, 8.15 pm |
